If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 immediately.
For oral, dental, or surgical emergencies that are not life-threatening — including post-operative bleeding that does not stop with pressure, severe swelling, signs of infection, dislodged surgical packing, broken teeth, or significant facial trauma — established Sunset Oral and Facial Surgery patients should call our West Hollywood office at (310) 275-3635 during regular business hours, or follow the after-hours emergency instructions provided on your post-operative paperwork. Dr. Salehani is committed to providing prompt evaluation and care for patients with surgical complications or unexpected developments after treatment.
For new patients without an established relationship with our practice — or for any patient experiencing severe uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, signs of a serious systemic infection (such as fever above 101°F with significant facial swelling), or facial trauma involving possible fracture or significant tissue injury — the safest course of action is to proceed directly to the nearest hospital emergency department, where multidisciplinary emergency care is immediately available. Once the emergency is stabilized, Dr. Salehani is happy to provide follow-up evaluation, second-opinion consultation, or coordinated reconstructive care at our office.
When to Seek Emergency Care
The following symptoms warrant prompt evaluation:
- Uncontrolled Bleeding: Post-operative bleeding that does not stop after 30 minutes of firm gauze pressure.
- Severe Swelling: Rapidly progressive facial swelling, particularly when accompanied by fever or difficulty swallowing.
- Signs of Serious Infection: Fever above 101°F, increasing pain after 72 hours post-surgery, or visible pus drainage.
- Facial Trauma: Significant injuries to the face, jaw, or teeth resulting from falls, accidents, or impacts.
- Knocked-Out Permanent Teeth: Avulsed permanent teeth — keep the tooth moist (in milk or saliva) and seek care immediately, as reimplantation success drops significantly after the first hour.
- Difficulty Breathing or Swallowing: Any compromise of the airway is a true emergency requiring immediate 911 contact.
